Labindia Instruments is the authorised distributor of TE Instruments in India, providing XPLORER-V NS, Xplorer TS Analyzer advanced elemental combustion analyzer, technical expertise, application support, installation, and after-sales service across the country.

With the increasing adoption of ethanol-blended fuels, accurate fuel quality testing has become more important than ever. Fuel ethanol is widely used as a biofuel additive in gasoline, improving combustion efficiency and reducing harmful emissions. As countries move towards cleaner fuels such as E10, E15, and E20 ethanol blends, monitoring sulfur content is essential to meet stringent environmental regulations.

Labindia Instruments, the authorised distributor of TE Instruments in India, offers advanced elemental combustion analyzers for accurate Total Sulfur (UV-Fluorescence) analysis in fuel ethanol, helping laboratories, refineries, and biofuel producers comply with international testing standards.

Why is Total Sulfur Testing Important in Fuel Ethanol?

Fuel ethanol acts as an oxygenating agent in gasoline, enabling cleaner and more efficient combustion. It is commonly blended with gasoline at concentrations such as 10% (E10), 15% (E15), and increasingly 20% (E20) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Although ethanol itself contains very little sulfur, sulfur contamination can occur through the denaturant added during production to make ethanol unsuitable for human consumption. These denaturants are typically derived from natural gas liquids, contributing small amounts of sulfur to the final fuel blend.

According to TIER 3 and EURO 6 fuel regulations, gasoline blended with ethanol must contain no more than 10 ppm sulfur. To verify compliance, fuel ethanol is routinely analyzed using elemental combustion analyzers following internationally recognized methods such as ASTM D5453.

Methods:

The XPLORER-S is a great solution to perform the analysis of Total Sulfur in Fuel Ethanol following the international test method ASTM D5453. This elemental combustion analyzer fully complies with, but is not limited to, the following international test methods for ‘low boiling’ liquid samples (<420 °C):
• ASTM D5453
• ASTM D7183
• ISO 20846
• IP 490
• SH/T 0689

ASTM D5453 – The Standard for Total Sulfur Analysis

ASTM D5453 is the globally accepted standard test method for determining Total Sulfur in hydrocarbons, fuels, and fuel ethanol using Ultraviolet Fluorescence (UV-F) detection.

The method provides:

  • High sensitivity for low-level sulfur detection
  • Excellent accuracy and repeatability
  • Reliable compliance with international fuel regulations
  • Fast and efficient routine quality control

ASTM D5453 is widely used by fuel testing laboratories, ethanol producers, refineries, and petrochemical companies worldwide.

TE Instruments XPLORER Series for ASTM D5453 Testing

The TE Instruments XPLORER-S and XPLORER-NS  Elemental Combustion Analyzers, equipped with the Liquids Introduction Module (Direct Injection), are specifically designed for accurate determination of Total Sulfur (UV-F) in fuel ethanol.

To validate instrument performance, TE Instruments participated in two Interlaboratory Studies (ILS) conducted according to ASTM D5453.

The results demonstrated:

  • Z-scores consistently close to zero
  • Results matching the interlaboratory average
  • Excellent analytical accuracy
  • Standard deviations significantly below ASTM D5453 repeatability (r) limits

These findings confirm the XPLORER systems as reliable solutions for laboratories requiring precise sulfur analysis and regulatory compliance.

How the TE Instruments XPLORER System Works:

1. Automated Sample Introduction

The ARCHIE Liquids XYZ Auto Sampler automatically introduces liquid samples into the analyzer at a controlled rate.

The sample passes through a heated Liquids Introduction Module operating at 500°C, specifically designed to analyze liquid samples with final boiling points of up to 420°C. Direct liquid injection minimizes operator intervention while ensuring consistent and reproducible sample introduction.

2. High-Efficiency Combustion

The XPLORER-S features a dual-zone combustion furnace with temperatures adjustable up to 1150°C.

A unique Collision Flow Tube introduces secondary oxygen into the combustion process, replenishing depleted oxygen and significantly improving oxidation efficiency. This innovative design enables complete combustion even for complex and difficult-to-oxidize fuel samples, ensuring accurate sulfur conversion to sulfur dioxide (SO₂).

3. Gas Conditioning

Before sulfur detection, the combustion gases undergo an efficient conditioning process.

  • Water vapor is removed using a Perma Pure gas dryer
  • Particulates are captured by a reusable, cleanable filter
  • Eliminates the recurring cost of disposable PTFE fiber filters
  • Delivers a clean gas stream to the detection system for maximum analytical accuracy

4. UV-Fluorescence Detection

The conditioned gas enters the UV-Fluorescence detector, where sulfur dioxide (SO₂) molecules are excited by ultraviolet light.

The detector measures the emitted fluorescence, which is directly proportional to the sulfur concentration in the sample.

The integrated detector response provides:

  • Highly accurate sulfur quantification
  • Excellent linearity across the measurement range
  • Reliable low-level sulfur detection
  • Automated data reporting through TEIS Software, with seamless integration into Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
