The Roll Stability Tester is designed to determine the shear stability of lubricating greases by measuring the change in worked penetration after mechanical working under controlled temperature conditions.
Complying with ASTM D1831 and MIL-G-10924SA, this precision-engineered apparatus is available in single, double, and four-unit models, each offering microprocessor-based temperature control for consistent and repeatable testing up to 93°C (200°F) — with an optional high-temperature model extending to 160°C (320°F).
The Roll Stability Tester evaluates the mechanical shear stability of lubricating greases by simulating prolonged mechanical working. A pre-weighed sample is placed in a steel test cylinder with a roller, which is then rotated at either 10 or 165 rpm for a specified duration within a thermostatically controlled chamber.
After testing, the grease penetration is re-measured to determine the change in worked consistency, indicating its shear stability under operational stress.
The system features microprocessor PID temperature control, providing ±1°C (±2°F) accuracy and rapid stabilization without overshoot. Dual LED displays show both setpoint and actual chamber temperature. The apparatus is driven by a rugged ratio motor for reliability and endurance during long test cycles.
Safety and durability are ensured through a balanced cast aluminum fan, shielded heating elements, insulated steel housing, and a durable polyurethane enamel finish. Optional RS-232 communication and ramp-to-set software enhance automation and traceability in research or production environments.
For advanced applications, the High Temperature Model expands the testing range up to 160°C (320°F), enabling studies that exceed conventional D1831 specifications.
