The Water Washout Tester is a precision instrument designed to evaluate the resistance of lubricating greases to water washout under controlled conditions, in accordance with ASTM standards. The system simulates real-world operating environments by rotating a lubricated ASTM ball bearing at 600 rpm while subjecting it to a controlled jet of water at specified flow rates and temperatures.
The test process involves weighing the bearing and shields before and after testing to accurately determine the amount of grease loss due to water exposure. This provides a reliable assessment of the lubricant’s ability to remain in place under wet conditions.
The system consists of a reservoir, bearing housing, circulation system, and drive motor. The reservoir is equipped with a cartridge heater, thermoregulator, and thermometer port, ensuring precise temperature control at standard test conditions of 100°F and 175°F (38°C and 79°C).
A high-performance circulation system incorporates a constant velocity carbon bearing gear pump, flowmeter, and control valves to deliver a consistent water flow through a 1 mm capillary spray nozzle directed at the bearing housing. The rugged 1/3 hp drive motor powers both the bearing rotation and the circulation system, maintaining stable operation throughout the test.
A dual pulley arrangement allows independent operation of the circulation pump, enabling water heating prior to testing. The entire system is mounted on a durable steel base with locating feet for secure benchtop installation.
