The Petroleum Colorimeter is designed for ASTM color determination of petroleum products that are darker than ASTM 0.5, including lubricating oils, diesel fuels, and heating oils. For lighter products, the Saybolt Chromometer is recommended. The instrument uses a three-field petroleum comparator, allowing the sample and two consecutive standard color glasses to be viewed simultaneously, facilitating precise and efficient color matching.

The system features a tungsten halogen light source color-corrected to CIE Standard Illuminant C, providing uniform lighting conditions independent of ambient light. A prism merges the three fields for easier comparison. For rapid quality checks, the glass standards can be preset to limiting colors to verify that the sample falls within tolerance limits. This ensures reliable and repeatable color grading for laboratory and industrial applications.
